Building a Plinth for a SP10 MKII

Building a Plinth for a SP10 MKII

Standard plinths for the Technics SP10 MKII often have excess space around the edges meaning that they do not give enough clearance under a Vinyl Recorder T560 overhead, so some years ago we designed a plinth to seat ours comfortably. Over the years the price of wood has gone through the roof making our profits margins extremely slim, and now not massively worth us pursuing to sell so we have decided to make the files available for free for anyone wanting to make one themselves.

We have created three different versions, each designed for a different tonearm. After researching common mounting distances, we chose the three most widely used measurements: 214mm, 222mm, and 295mm. With these options, you’ll easily find a tonearm that suits your needs. Tonearm mounting distances can be found online if you need further guidance.

Building the Plinth

These plinths are straightforward to assemble. Follow these steps:

1. Cut the Pieces:
• Use the provided .SVG files to cut the four labeled pieces from 18mm plywood.
• Once assembled, this will give a total height of 72mm.

2. Assemble the Plinth:
• Glue and clamp the pieces together in order, with Piece 1 on top and Piece 4 at the bottom.
• For additional stability, you can secure the layers with 6mm or 7mm screws from underneath.

3. Finishing Touches:
• Sand and stain the plinth as desired.

Modifications for Your VR

Replacing the Feet:
• The stock feet on your VR have bolts running through the base plate to secure the metal Technics 1210-style footings.
• You will need to remove these entirely and replace them with alternative feet which are readily available online.

Raising the VR Overhead:
• Your VR overhead will likely need to be raised.
• We’ve included cut files for these adjustment pieces as well.

Hopefully this is helpful for someone.
