As we sell liquid disc sets, we thought it’s about time we make a blog post on how we make them. We know many do it professionally and likely have their own methods, but here is how we do it.
Items needed:
• Liquid disc set (available here)
• 2 x blank discs (available here)
• UV plastic bonding glue (Permabond UV639)
• UV curing light (cure wavelength 365-420 nm)
• Liquid to fill the void
• Gloves and paper towels to clean up!
The first step is to prepare the discs. You must keep one side of the protective layer on the discs, this is the side you will cut as mineral afterwards. For this, we have used 1mm 7” blanks and 1mm liquid disc inner pieces.
First, we glue the central inner piece down to the bottom blank, use a thin ring of glue as once you apply pressure with your hand, it spreads out, try to make sure as much surface area as possible is covered. Then, while applying pressure with you hand, use the UV curing light for 60 seconds to bond. Make sure you move the light around to make sure all glue is set and keep the light close to the glue. The longer you cure, the better.
Next, we do the same with the outer ring, just a thin line long its surface will do. Again, add pressure and use the UV curing light to bond. At this point, make sure everything is nicely sealed.
Next, we put the disc on a flat, level surface and add liquid, we used water with pink colouring, you can experiment with any liquid you like. Don’t over fill, space is needed for the liquid to freely move.
Finally add glue to the central and outer ring and place the top blank disc on top, add pressure and use the UV light. Each step is the same, go slow and careful, it’s easy to make a mess!
This disc took us about 10 minutes to make. We know it's a little messy, but you get the idea.
Experiment and be creative, and if you find better ways to do it, share it with the community.
