Vinyl Recorder Cutterhead EQ Presets

If you have followed us for a while, you know we love an EQ’d head; turning entry level lathes into feed forward systems. However, we often, and understandably, get messages from people saying they feel a little out of their depth to EQ their own head. We get it, this stuff can be daunting if you don’t have much mastering knowledge and we want to empower not only those with prior experience, but also give a helping hand to those just starting out, and this is hopefully a good place to begin.
We always will say that EQing your own specific head will get you the very best results; as all heads have slightly different frequency responses and as different length diamonds become part of the head sonically this also causes differences. But to get people going and to show what improvements can be made by using dedicated EQs, we are releasing our EQ curve presets that we used in our Vinyl Recorder heads.
Below are download links for FabFilter Pro-Q (we used Q3). These presets were made around five or six years ago, and we've also included audio examples of the quality we were getting from our Vinyl Recorders using them. Bear in mind that nothing in the lathe world is plug and play, all heads are slightly different. These curves may get you great cuts straight away, but more likely they'll get you around 80% of the way there.
Please also make sure your audio is not peaking inside the plugin before cutting and to use this EQ, it means bypassing the Main Unit, going direct from audio source to cutter amp. Please make sure your playback calibration is accurate before trying any test cuts, if you are not measuring your cutting volume accurately you can blow your head...
You'll download both file types below, use whichever you prefer to install:
• .ffp
• .aupreset
We have two presets with download links, choose whichever you want based on the styli type you use in your VR head:
